Argumentative Research Paper: Childhood Obesity Issac Jones ECPI University ENG 120 Advanced Composition M. Barnes June 11, 2017 Health has become a very popular topic in today’s society; how to lose weight, healthy body mass index, proper foods to eat to give your body nutrition, certain exercises to help lose weight here or gain muscle there, lower prices for a gym memberships, it seems to be a topic we are hearing about all the time now. However, there seems to lack of conversation about the health of the younger generation. Obesity among children is a growing problem in today’s society (Ogden, Carroll, Lawman, Fryar, Kruszon-Moran, Kit 2015). As exhibited in the chart, rates have†¦show more content†¦As the child endures the maltreatment, they can turn to food for comfort during the difficult times (Anda, Felitti, Bremner, Walker, Whitfield, Perry, Giles, 2006). As their cognitive function changes, a child’s way of thinking about food becomes more than just a method to eat when you are hungry, but it becomes a way to eat when they are stressed, depressed, or looking to control an aspect of their lives (Stice Bohon, 2012). Parents continuously make choices for their children. Every day, they decide what the child will wear, what shows they watch, what time they go to bed, what they will eat, and so much more. When grocery shopping in the store, parents have to make conscious purchases in order to maximize their budget (Krukowski, West, Harvey-Berino, Prewitt, 2010). These decisions will influence whether the family can afford a two-dollar box of Macaroni and Cheese, opposed to fifteen-dollars’ wor th of items to create a salad. How will these decisions affect childhood obesity? The answer is simple; it will affect a child. Young children and even adults need a mixture of fruits, vegetables, protein, grains, and dairy on every plate in order to consume a healthy diet (U.S. Department of Agriculture, 2017). As indicated by the graphic above (U.S Department of Agriculture, 2017), each child and adults plate need to have the proportional foods in order to consume a healthy diet.
